Z18ET turbo, Z20, Z22, Z24 -- these crossflow-headed engines are based on the L-series. All install into a 1200 more or less the same way (see Z-series Engine Swap).

Overview
The Z-series engine replaced the L-series engine. Some Z-engine packages were called "NAPS-Z", and these were Z-engines with Nissan Anti-Pollution System (NAPS). In the USA where emissions were most important, the NAPS-Z twin-plug versions (or single plug with Catalytic Converter) completely replaced the L-series engines. In turn, the Z was replaced by NAPS-X engines.

The nice thing about the Z18ET is its a factory setup, legal in most Australia states for a 1200. The downside is how available is it, including the wiring harness?

Z-series was a common engine in the larger Datsuns, as it replaced the L-series engine starting in 1979 in many markets.

Head Bolts
Z-series engines use head bolts designed for the A-series engines. For more details on the specific bolts, see Head Bolts.
Since the Z24 has common head gasket problems, it is recommended to re-torque the head bolts every 2 years/24000 miles. The smaller engines need no retorque if equipped with '13' bolts. Unmarked bolts should be retorqued every 2 years.
