Overview

Sedan: Europe orange blinkers vs USA red blinkers
Facelift Sedans used a different taillight:
Troubleshooting
Inoperative rear taillights, Turn Signal lights, or brake lights? Check for adequate grounding/earthing of the plastic combination lamp assembly.
1. Check the metal-to-metal contact of the ground wire (black) from the right side tail light assembly at the grounding post on the panel inside the trunk area. Remove any paint or dirt that prevents good contact
2. Using an ohmmeter, check the ground wire (black) from the harness in the engine compartment to the battery negative post for continuity to the instruments and lights of the vehicle. If continuity is lacking, repair the break or replace the wire
3. A heavy gauge ground strap connecting the engine to the body of the vehicle assures proper grounding. The ground strap is built into the original negative battery cable
Bulbs
All 1200s use a 3-section taillight. Japan market and North American market use these bulbs:
* 26717-89900 12V-23W [Top/Outer bulb] * 26717-89920 12V-23/8W [Middle bulb] * 26717-89900 12V-23W [Bottom/Inner bulb]
Japan-market has an additional small bulb in the middle section:
* 26261-89900 12V-3.4W (Wedge socket) used until Aug 1986 in the Truck
Sedan
Note that non-GX and GX use the same taillights
#H10 Japan and #H16 North America tail light have Red blinkers, instead of Yellow/Orange
#H19 Australia/Europe lenses have Orange for the blinkers

* Japan and North America both use Red lenses (no amber) * the red lenses differ, presumably in reflective pattern * the center section has two bulbs (Japan) or one bulb (NA) Therefore the assembly housing and Harness differ All other parts are the same (Bulbs, Rim, Packing, white reverse Lens)

Reflectors
In most countries, reflecting surfaces are built-into the rear lamps.
For those countries where they are not, or where a bigger relector is required -- such as Australia and Kenya -- separate rear reflectors were added:
Third Brake Lamp
Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL) a.k.a. 3rd brake light can be adapted to the 1200, or a "universal" fitted. USA data indicates a long-term enduring crash-reduction benefit of 4.3%.
Mandatory for new cars * United States and Canada since 1986 light trucks since 1994 * Australia and New Zealand since 1990 * Many European countries since 1998

North America Notes
USA regulates the wattage, color and placement of the tail lights.
Canada generally adopts the same standards as USA.
USA "Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 [1968] allows rear turn signals to be either red or amber in color... amber signals show a 5.3% effectivenss in reducing involvement in two-vehicle crashes where a lead vehicle is rear-struck in the act of turn left, turning right, merging into traffic, changing lanes, or entering/leaving a parking space. The advantage of amber rear turn signals is shown to be statistically significant." -- NTSHA document.
Nevertheless, amber was slow in coming. Even in the 1990s red rear turns signals are commonplace. The Nissan Altima even changed three times, from Amber to Red to Amber and back to red.
"In Europe and many other countries, rear turn signals are required to be amber. Currently [2009], manufacturers ... [for] North American markets choose whether to produce [amber or red rear turn signals]." -- NTSHA document.
