#1 Front brake upgrade, any suggestions?
gino_120y Posted on: 2007/2/7 18:11
After the Melb cruise i came to realise that i need better brakes.
Im running the stock 120y struts with lowered springs,
and the standard Japanese made calipers and disks with a set of ultimate

nice to know after having you sitting behind me on the cruise
dont know of much that would bolt onto the standard struts, so would be best to go for the bigger datsun struts on stanza arms if you dont mind the track increase

i assume you want 260z rears as a bigger drum upgrade on the back?
from what i have seen with 180b drums, the IRS models have a different bolt pattern to the H series diffs
so maybe try bluebird drums or discs if you have a H series diff

The Slivia brakes onto 120Y struts has been disussed a bit....I've never done it, but it's listed in the wiki (unfortunately without muck info)

I am running 120y struts in my 1200 ute. On these struts I have a Kev Rowley Brake adaptor plate (about $100 for the pair) Rotors, calipers, calliper bolts (2 per caliper) and wheel studs from a 1989 nissan silvia. You also need the flexi brake hose (mine came off a 1995 corolla cause thats all I could find). Very simple conversion.
- MACHINE THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE HUBS DOWN SO THE ROTOR WILL SLIDE OVER IT (150mm FROM MEMORY BUT I HAVE HAD ALLOT OF RUM SINCE I DID CONVERSION) PREFERABLY USE A LATHE BUT YOU CAN USE A GRINDER.
- KNOCK OUT 120Y STUDS AND BANG IN SILVIA ONES
- CUT A 10mm SLOT IN THE HOSE MOUNT ON THE STRUT TUBE (LITTLE METAL TAB THE BRAKE HOSE SITS IN)
- BOLT BRACKETS TO STRUTS
- SLIDE ROTORS ON
- BOLT CALIPERS ON WITH PADS
- CONNECT HOSES
- BLEED
- RE-FIT WHEELS
- TEST DRIVE
I need to get mine engineered cause mine was drum brake to start with but you should be fine. I have some pics if you are interested

EDIT - You use the origional 120y caliper bolts to bolt the adaptor bracket to the strut assembly

check if 200b discs and calipers bolt on... I'm not 100% sure what i have, but i know i have 200b wheel bearings and 120y bottom ball joints, so I'm assuming i have 200b discs... not sure if its much of an upgrade, but the ute sure stops quick.

My philosophy on brakes are simple......

you can't have big enough brakes....

This setup is comprised of the std Ute struts, (like in the struts that had drums on b4)
VW Caravelle vented disks.
Camry calipers. (but really any vented disk caliper will work.)

obviously, you should note that this was on a severally restricted budget, else I would have had wilwood's on.. :)

fabrication includes the 2 brackets that hold the calipers, and the holes in the disks for the studs.

The spacers are so the 14" rims could clear the Struts. This conversion does require the use of bigger rims, 13" rims don't fit no more....

For crzy_1200_ute
These are some pics of the SILVIA brake upgrade with the KEV ROWLEY brackets. And yes KEV is still making the brackets. If you are interested PM me and I will let you know his details.

those Kev Rowley brakes fit under 14" wheels?

problem with the 120y strut is that it's too long for a severly lowered car, increasing the chance of bottoming out

i'd go with the zx brake swap. strut tube is one of the shortest to give you more suspension travel

the front uses single-piston calipers with 10" vented rotors

this setup will even clear some 13" wheels, which i doubt most other swaps could do

of course, zx's are common here but not sure about downundah

280zx strut/brake swap

the wilwood calipers aren't expensive. it's the gettign to put them on, that costs alot. if you are spendilg lots of $ on brake pads, the ones for the wilwood calipers are very affordable, so in a few brake pad changes you might have made up the cost.

you just can't go wrong with the wilwoods, they're really light too.
