hmmmmm I would be thinking dodgy at this stage.

A couple of points.
1- He stated that he was happy with photos alone to purchase the car, which you provided.

2- When he collected the car he stated that he was happy with the car. He would have signed a form from the car carriers agreeing that the car was fine when he recieved it. That indenimifies the carriers from libilaity.

I would be saying that since he agreeed to purchase the car sight unseen and without a professional inspection, that he must bear all liabality for any cost incured once he collected the car from the carriers at the very least. You could even agrue that duty of care passed from you when you gave it to the carriers.
In any event, he stated that the car was fine on collection. Thats it for your liabality.
The only reason for you to provide any finanical assistance to this bloke is if you feel guilty becasue you sold him a dodgy car. You have stated that everything was fine and its a good runner so you should feel no guilt at all. You provided a vehicle as requested in the condition as initally inspected (by photos).
Legally, thats it for you. Morally, well thats up to you.

Similar situtation happened to me when I picked up my Ute, I went and fully inspected it, checked all the basics, took it for a drive etc. Came back in a day or two to drive it back to Sydney from Mittagong about 1.5hrs all highway. Blew the head gasket on the way home. I was mad, I was really mad - I didn't see any oil in the radiator nor any smoke prior to purchase; but I knew once I bought it, a 32 yr old ute with a standard a12 in it, it was then my responsibility. New gasket and radiator later and a bill to match it was back on the road. I put this down to just plain bad luck!

But this guy is having a laugh! He has bought a turbo'd ute and by the sounds of it, flogged it and pranged it!

I sold my 600cc 2006 R6 trackbike to a guy and he crashed it twice the day he took it out to the track. He didn't ask me for anything but out of good will I gave him what spares I had, only small things like levers and foot pegs. In the back of my mind I thought it was going to turn into something similar to this situation.
My advice, be straight with the guy, tell him the way it is. He bought it and that is that. Like others have said you can 'try' and help him out. But honestly, I wouldn't.

There is always the temptation when you have just bought a performance car to see what it will do, and if the driver is lacking sound judgment catastrophe can occur (cooked motors, boiled brakes, cars wrapped around power poles).

You will never know if this guy has had a genuine run of bad luck or just was an over eager test pilot.

I had a guy go for a test drive in my car with me next to him, he hit a speed hump at 60kph, totally destroyed the catalytic converter, if thats what they do when your sitting next to them who knows how they will treat your car when your not there.

yep if you know that when you sold it all was good, and he confirmed it on pickup then even morally you have no obligation!

brakes stopped working... how does he explain that one?

shifty bugger, tell him to get stuffed. not your problem any more

Well I probably could explain the brakes one. Frank changed the brakes for the classic car show more than six months ago, but he had to change them back because of the master cylinder. Brake fluid needs to be changed within six months or else it goes spongy. I'm not blaming anyone because I've just learned this from an engineer, so now I'll be doing full flushes within six months because I'm pretty happy with how they ride after doing that.

Sad to hear about this dude acting like a chumphead at you.
