OK so I cant bring myself to watch the public flaying and dismemberment of Rudd. Hes not the worst PM weve ever had, no one should be subjected to this kind of treatment. Wow what an incredible display of claws and knives...and they think we should trust them?

I have a horrible feeling that this has more to do with going up against the mining industry more than any other of his shortcomings, (of which ALL PMs have and will have.)

You hit the nail on the head! The mining industry wealds a very large stick and Kevie got a taste of that. The mining & petroleum industries are the big guns in this. They have the money and the numbers to effect this sort of change in governments not just in this country either. It make me wonder what sort of deals were made.

Krudd had some great ideas and did quite a bit for Australia but it is politics remember! He sort of failed at the business of pleasing everyone enough to get his policies streaming through. it was only a few months ago that he was the most popular (according to opinion polls) PM ever!

Just because you're rich doesn't mean that no one wants to kill you. A refugee is someone who's life is in danger. And if they were rich in their own country they were likely hard workers. Doesn't this make them valuable?

As a fellow decendant of early settlers, pre federation, how do you think the locals felt when we came? There's certainly no Aboriginals left where I grew up, maybe a few genes floating around, doesn't take much to figure out where they went.

Immigration and asylum for refugees are seperate issues as is population growth.

Bigger questions need to be answered, like, why are Australians (as are people in many other countires) Xenophobic (fear of difference)? Is a strong economy worth the population growth? (With our currnet systems they are directly linked). Do we have an intrinsic right to keep fellow humans off this land?

I agree Australia is facing infastructure problems, especially in Melbourne and Sydney but this is related to population growth and a lack of preemptive infastructure investment. If the answer is we want space and not to have people move here in search of a better life or to escape persecution then the answers lie else where. Really its irresponsible of politicians to use "boat people" as a scape goat or a scare campaign to distract us from the important things.

Most people who immigrate do so for a better future and work really hard. I know I wouldn't consider studying full time and driving a taxi at night to pay my fees as is a common story for new Australians.

Australia is a massively racist country, it’s pretty much casually accepted by almost everyone.

A couple of times I've pulled blokes up on making racist jokes about Aboriginals, mostly I just leave the room though.

I think most of the time its not that Aussies HATE other races/cultures either, most of the time we just parrot a line we heard elsewhere cos it sounds vaguely like what a real Australian would say.

In practice that phrase is jammed with multiple interpretations and racist ideology.

What does it mean to Love Australia?

Again simplistically:

Loving a country means appreciating it, contributing to its development and being part of a shared experience.

In practice:
Loving Australia is reduced to conforming with what the person shouting the phrase wants you to do or to stop doing.

Eg: Loving Australia can be shown by kissing the flag as 20 people surround and intimidate and perhaps attack you

Eg: Loving Australia can also be shown by picking up that Maccas wrapper someone just threw down and binning it cos YOU want to look after Australia.

I am always putting on the “beached as” accent, doing “ze Russian voice #OOPS#en”
And paying out Asian drivers, its just an Aussie thing to do.

Yet I never stereotype indigenous Australians, purely because I was brought up to acknowledge the #OOPS#ed up #OOPS# that happened to them.
