Oh for sure, but they are harder to find now, also need to re jig the gearbox mount and file down the edge of the tab on the clutch cable.

She might of had a 60 series that went bye bye. Too little info and too many variables still

True !! I'd even advise her to go new HD clutch kit, like a Vanette, for extra $50 and dont forget to machine the flywheel.. Just incase you decide later down the track to throw a weber on it etc etc. Dont just think the cheapest quickest solution. It's not over kill, it's just like insurance. Do it once , do it properly.

120y wagons are awesome, I would buy a 5 speed if you are thinking of keeping her as she will like cruising better with an overdrive. She will always keep her value been what it is and not a Hyundai excel so its up to you.
Diff wise the 3.7 H150 is quite rare in Oz and the 3.5 and 3.3 non existent and command around 300 USD from the USA. Then you have to have it fitted and will cost halve of a 5 speed and then you can just use the 4 speed 60 series box but they are rare too in good condition.
Someone I think Bige was selling a datsun 60 series 5 speed with all the goodies and I think Nick might have sold his Toyota t50 dellows conversion also or not selling anymore?.

Hi guys,

A real late reply i know, since last i put another 4 speed in as it was all i could find and barely afford at the time didnt even check the model it was a really rushed and slack buy on my behalf.

Unfamilia you have a point there i realize now the old box was very sloppy from the get go and smashing through gears definetly didnt help the situation! Its a stock A15 engine at the moment not sure what model the gearbox is i think its a 56 but i may be wrong.

Thanks for all the feed back i will definetly consider a 5 speed (and all the bits and pieces to go with) at some point as i intend to keep the 120y and do a full resto once i get back to work and settle in my own house. For the mean time im thinking about attaching a webber not to sure on the model but i have a mate that has a spare off some sort of 1.8L motor.

Also i have considered (down the track) fuel injecting the weber can anyone shed some light on this?

where are you sunnygirl?

theres a 5sp on gumtree perth apparently rebuilt for $900
weekend1000 also has one for $850

I bought mine off him, nice guy to deal with.

If you want to try to get some more life out of your 4sp, supercheap and repco sell an additive by Nulon called G70
I have had some success with this

4-speed is perfectly fine, returns better acceleration than a 5-speed and still provides a 150 kph top speed.

A15 gearboxes are the 60-series. They have '60' cast into the right side and are smooth-case boxes.

56A will last behind an A15
56L (early 1200) will break behind an A15, the gears will literally chip off.

56L has no marking.
56A will be cast into the right side.

Early 56A - will last if easily driven

Late 56A 4-speed - super strong.

BeeJJ i am in brisbane at the moment and weekend1000 has mentioned he has a 5 speed spare at what seems like a reasonable but i decided i will have to do something with the diff because its just about gone anyway its making horrible grinding noises. I figure this new 4 speed is doing fine so i may as put the money into something that really needs attention.
Thanks for the tip though i will probly give the G70 ago ide like this gbox to last as long as possible.

Thanks ddgonzal atleast i know where and what im looking for now so i can id what gbox i have.

Being a 120Y it can have either a borg warner diff (Plate on back) or a h150 in Australia as they came with either,The Lift out bolt in Diff centre H series is best.

If it is a borg warner then you will need a whole diff assembly and that means ideally a 1200 Ute complete diff, then you can find either a 3.9 or the more common 3.7 out of either a stanza (3.9) or Bluebird series one (3.7) and all of these are the stronger H165 and desireable for long term A 15 Power.

The ute diff is not a direct bolt-in for a 120Y. The shock mounting points needs modification and perhaps the hand brake cable.

Ideally you would replace a 120Y diff with another 120Y diff. The 120Y diffs (either kind) are strong lasting for long term A15 torque. The exception is the 1974 120Y diff which is too weak and will eventually break behind an A15.
