Need help sorting through the bag of bolts I have to get the correct bolts to secure A series engine to transmission. I have 2 different long bolt lengths. Also does the starter have 2 different size bolt heads? If I could get the Tech Wiki link that shows all of these bolts that would be much appreciated.

Bolts to fasten the starter to the transmission -- two identical bolts

08121-03533 (2)

08 NES
12 Hexagon bolt, Medium carbon steel
10 M10
35 35mm length

or with the optional Reduction Gear starter
08121-03533 (1) [35mm length]
08121-04533 (1) [45mm length]

By the way, it's not in the wiki because the 1200 catalogs are missing it (both JDM and USA). The other catalogs B210 and B310 have it as above (those are where the 60-series comes from anyways it is the same bolts whether 56 or 60 series)

56-series & 60-series & 63-series. Wiki has B110 parts at Transmission Case Part Numbers (see #1, #9 and #24)

transmission case to engine block
* Late: 08120-85510 BOLT-hex early (6)
* Early: 08120-86010 BOLT (6 + 1 for gusset upper bolt)

So it was either a set of six 55mm bolts or six 60mm bolts

whether engine uses the 3.5mm plate or not doesn't matter, uses same size bolts (some early models had the plate, and some late model did not)

Thanks DD. Need more help on this. I found an old thread that you had on this same subject and you made a nice sketch. Are there any markings on the bolt heads that would help me sort them out? With regard to the long bolts, I have more of the 65mm than I do of the 60mm which appear to be the correct ones? I wouldn't think there would be a problem to use the 65mm. I have 3 setups, 2 are A15/60A 5-speed and 1- A12/56 4-speed all of which use the 3.5mm plate. I am sorting the bolts for the A15/5 speed.

Can't seem to find the correct starter bolts. There are a pair of identical bolts in one of the pics about 35mm but are not the proper thread for the starter. Any way you can tell if the bolts I have posted belong with the housing?

Older thread............

HOLES
Blue: 8.5 mm
Red (dowels): 9.5 mm
Green: 8.5 mm
Gray: 11 mm (bottom two are 10x11 oval)

BOLTS
Blue & green (6)
* 08120-06065 4-speed, 08120-06010 5-speed
** hex bolt medium-strength, M08(?) x 60mm long (6)
Gray Starter
* 08121-03533 BOLT-HEX W/WASHER(M10 X 1.5) (2)
** medium-strength M10 x 35mm long (2)
Gray bottom right
* 08111-02062 BOLT-HEX HEAD WITH WASHER, COVER TO TRA
** M10 x 20mm low-strength
Gray GUSSET Engine-to-gearbox
* left side, bottom two holes (fits in from front)
** 08131-04010 56-series high-strength M10 x 40mm

Per the catalog they should be either 55 or 60 mm long. Measure doesn't include the head

55 and 60 are not mixed on one transmission. At first Datsun used six 55mm, later changed to six 60mm. They are marked blue and green in the diagram. The others are the two starter bolts and the optional dust cover/motor plate bolts

Starter bolts are:

Nissan Part Number 08121-03533 BOLT-HEX W/WASHER(M10 X 1.5) (quantity 2)

* medium-strength carbon bolt M10 x 35mm long
* I don't know what the head size is (my faltering memory is telling me 15mm?)

you can get bolts like this at Ace hardware or NAPA or just about anywhere. Even at the Nissan dealer but they are the most expensive

Makes sense! Ok will remeasure tomorrow. Any way to visually tell the difference between low, medium and high strength bolts? All of the bolt heads have a number or letter stamped. Does that indicate anything. Thanks again.

That's a good question

Metric bolt in general are marked on the head
* no marks (equivalent to non-metric Grade 2 or 3)
* 8.8 (equivalent to non-metric Grade 5)
* 10.8 (equivalent to non-metric Grade 8)
* 12.9 super strong

But I don't think the old ones have those marks

Nissan bolts sometimes have an alloy formula mark
* T (strong)
* 12 (stronger)
* 13 (chromoly V steel much strong)

In your photo it seems
a. '4' unknown meaning, like the bolts that hold the air cleaner on
b. 3 radial lines (American Grade 5?) This video has that triangle mark
c. Maybe the bottom two bolts if i remember correctly

wiki: Fastener ID markings

A word of warning to everybody Jim Berry from Competition clutches in Brisbane sometimes referred to as Brisvegas found out the hard way on his clutch dyno there are now issues with some of the better brand name fasteners.

He had fitted "Unbrako" brand in-hex bolts to a clutch and felt something strange happen to a clutch he had just built when testing on his clutch dyno and found the bolts had stretched but not yet failed.

It seems that our old friends the Chinese are supplying sub Standard steels to some subcontractors even decent brands such as Excedy clutches he has found recently when rebuilding pressure plates for customers with race cars that the pressure plate diaphragm springs seem to be loosing way too much pressure compared to previous years when a customer returns his clutch for an overhaul for the next season of racing.

So a word of warning if at all possible try and source genuine Nissan Datsun bolts, Jim had to rifle through his scrap bin and retrieve the original Nissan pressure plate mounting bolts to finish the dyno test on that clutch

To further this; I've saved every faster I've ever pulled off Datsun and not just be cause I'm cheap.

By trade I'm a Buyer, although I now write contracts, once upon a time I worked in manufacturing. The Chinese are capable of making good quality fasteners the issue arises from the way their business works, they often subcontract and those subcontractors in turn sub contract. We has consumers have no way of knowing what was done.

For non critical low stress stuff any old fastener will likely do but for critical stuff buy known quality (Nissan etc)

Back to the topic at hand; as I've saved up bunches of bolts I routinely scrounge through the bolts bins (I try to keep similar lengths together). I know I've mixed and matched lengths on the tranny to engine mounting bolts (fortunately it doesn't seem to be an issue) Of course I sometimes manage to mix in a SAE fastener and spend 2-3 minutes trying to figure out why the thread won't start, usually when I'm contorted in a awkward position.
