Bought a 1200 recently on the grounds that the engine started and it was able to drive it self out of the tangle of vines which embraced it...well it cost me $50 us. It has the newer a12 engine, with the alternator mounted higher up on the driver side. Here in Barbados the climate destroys most of those old datsuns leaving only a few garaged old folk putters,The body while more or less solid resembles a swiss cheese with a clear view of the road and front wheels from the front seats... luckily i found another shell but it's an automatic, I highly doubt I'll be finding a manual one .

I plan on dropping my engine and tranny into the automatic shell (4Dr), the automatic shell had the older a12 engine with the alternator lower down on the right side... What modifications need to be carried out to get the manual box in the automatic shell and will there be any trouble in getting the clutch pedal and clable in? will the drive shaft be the same length or will i need to use a manual one? Any help appreciated.

'Bridge' the start inhibit wires that go to the auto gearbox
Replace the spacer in pedal box with clutch pedal (requires removal of dash and pedal box)
Knock out the clutch firewall hole blanking plate
Install clutch cable
Replace gearbox and tailshaft with manual version.

I'm fairly certain that the gearbox mount is in the same place, as is the hole in the tunnel.

So I don't think you'll have any problems converting from auto to manual.

ok i am only new to the 1200 club but here in oz i bought a 1200 it was also auto so i bought a 120y for $80 it had a weber and extractors now when swapping auto to manual like dATTOMASTER said u have to put the cluth pedal in u dont have to pull the dash out its just a bit of a squeeze u need to remove the plate covering the hole for the clutch cable u need the mount for the cable and in manual cars there are nuts welded from factory on the inside but autos dont so u can either put bolts and nuts thru the holes or weld it there . NOW your gearbox crossmember is not the same auto have mounts in the floor in different position u can either weld new mounts in or make a new crossmember the speedo cable is the same but yet again your tailshaft is different auto,s have a bigger input shaft u need a manual one and then the yokes on the diff are different so u can either get a tailshaft made up or swap it with a manual one

lol....yeah thats the plan....the space inbetween the trees will be fairly close so thats why a spare shell is really needed. Or might jus do it in the rusty Mk1.

Well its about who u know not what u know...

That old dog looks pretty solid, I could definately spare a bonnet... Really I want to set up a nice road car so Im looking for reliability and drivability...rather than outright performance... I think an A15 would would be more than enough. I got to register on zhaust, but havent gotten around to that. The spare shell needs welding in places, but if its going to be for a spare for a Bushy Park car, it might be woth your bother I dont know... Will post pics as soon as I can...

PS... Looking for a cheap wrecker service or a car trailor to transport a 1200 shell... with all those connections, I thought you might know something... thanx
