Just a query for you. How hard should my camed up a14 be able to rev with a standard carb (driiled out jets) and points?
My vale springs should be fine to at least 8000, bet when I hold it flat in neutral it wont rev past 7500-7750. Dattodevil reckons the points are bouncing , but I thought that happened between 8000 and 10000. could the carb just be too small to pass anymore air? ( it was off an a12 originally) I just thought I'd throw it out to the all knowing datsun massive to see what y'all think.
Oh yeah, the comp is quite low also.
cheers Bart

Why do you want to rev it higher than 7500 RPM?
Worked A-Series motors dont produce much more power past 7600 RPM.........they will rev higher (granted) but power will begin to drop off.
Bottom line to high RPM is more air and more fuel.

Is there a need to rev your engine this hard or do you want to because you can.

I personally, very rarely rev the A14 in my race car past 8000 RPM...I just dont see the point.
It usually only occurs during down shifting under heavy braking.
I value engine reliablity [buget weekend racer] over potential outright maximum power ouput.

Thoughts from any one else.........

Benny

the carb and CR of the engine will definitely hurt the engine's rev potential, but as stated, why would you bother taking it up that high...? it's not like there's a second power band or anything. remember it's not a DOHC, it's a pushrod non-crossflow four.
if you want it to rev harder, get more air in and out of the engine quicker, and make sure the spark is there to ignite it all. a bigger carb will always help, as will a mild cam and a good exhaust - for starters.

To comment on your post.
I must also agree that it is not nessecary to rev your A14 to hell to get power.
I drive a A12GX and cannot get past 6000rpm although it can rev to 6700rpm according to the manual.
It just screams like hell and does'nt feel asif it is pulling much anymore.
It also gets small vibrations when driven to 6000rpm telling me "Hey man! you are putting me through some stress now".
Does yours also do that?
Dodgeman told me it is harmonic distortions from the engine.

My best advice.Get it on a dyno if you have the money and check the power graph where your best power is.
I would say about 6000 to 6500 would give you max power curve.
This is where you must shift when drag racing or just driving like crazy.
If you go higher you will only lose power and cause damage to your engine.
Please don't abuse your Datsun.

Some have reported that the A14 bottom end can go up to 8500 without damaging it.

But as stated, you won't get extra power out of it. The stock carburetor (even with drilled jets) makes maximum power somewhere below 5,000 rpm on an A14.

Thay bend push rods at 9300 to a Z shape. I have bent 2 while racing in differint races on the same night.Changed diff gears after that only went to 7500 in 3rd

Do it again, Do it again.
I want to know how long you can keep it there before it goes.................... BANG

Seriously, unless you are on the racetrack, you do not need this RPM level. I'l go with the others & suggest that you place a mark on the tach at about 5,500 to 6,000 rpm that says "Change gear now"

perhaps you could fit a monster tacho with the idiot light that tells you that the motor is about to blow unless you change now!
haha.

Why? Because I can!
actually, a mate of mine had an a12 that used to make power to 9500, and my cam is suposed to pull to 8.
Holeshot, if you replace the springs between your rocker arms with bushes, the rocker arms cant wander and you wont bend push rods.
admittedly the a14 has a longer stroke and therfore less rev capability than the a12.
once the super charger goes on it probably wont see much past 7 ,but my question was at what revs will the points bounce?

if you are using the stock dizzy about 6500
rpm---the competition dizzy I had went to
7500 rpm if you want higher revs you need
electonic ign and perhaps MSD unit

What did you mean by low compression
is your motor worn out or did you build
it that way
