The Nissan FJ Engineᵂ was basically a detuned race engine, a bit heavy but possibly Nissan's strongest ever engine. The stock engine can take massive boost and survive, while turning out incredible horsepower. Originally designed as the FJ24 for use in 240RS racing cars, it was in mass production as the FJ20 engine fitted to the DR30 Nissan Skyline. The FJ engine is very heavy with the turbo version at 366 lbs, heavier than the 318 lb Rover V8 Engineᵂ/Buick V8 3.5 liter engine and 36 pounds heavier than the SR20 turbo. The FJ engine was produced in three variations: 1) FJ24E 2) FJ20E 3) FJ20ET.

Overview
Aside from the very strong block which can survive massive power, the reason the FJ was so powerful was the 4-valve-per-cylinder head. It was Nissan's first mass produced 16-valve four-cylinder engine, a spiritual successor to the 1969 Skyline GT-Rᵂ S20 4-valve six-cylinder. In 1985 the CA18DE would replace the FJ, being Far, far lighter and more suitable for a range of roadgoing car, and yet with a block still capable of surviving 400hp. In turn, a larger displacement engine, the SR20, replaced the CA18DE.
For general information, see: http://fj20.com
The mighty FJ20E makes 148 HP from 2-liters, and with a turbo the FJ20ET makes up to 203 HP in stock form.
Although it is heavier than a GM 3800 V6, the FJ fits somewhat better into a 1200's engine bay. It looks most excellent, doesn't it?

Which is better? FJ20 or SR20?
Both:
- make about the same HP in stock form (SR20DE 140-169HP, F20E 148 HP)
- In turbo versions, both are too large for as 1200 (too large for normal engineering process) in Australian. In this country, the CA18DET is better than SR20DET or FJ20ET for street cars.
FJ20DET
- In stock condition, can take more boost than SR20DET, thus more HP without opening the engine up
SR20
- Lighter, so won't be as detrimental to handling
- More were produced, so prices are lower
Build-Ups
- FJ20 has all the usual build-up parts, same as SR20. However as less FJs were produced, so too the market for FJ parts is more expensive than SR parts.

Distributor
The FJ distributor uses Nissan Optical CAS for EFI computer signaling. See FJ CAS.
If converting to carbureted, use a standard distributor. The distributor from a Datsun A12 engine fits into the FJ20 engine block, but you need to change drive gear from A12 to FJ20 drive gear.
If the distributor is missing, use an A12 Datsun or Austin mini distributor. An A12 electronic ignition distributor is preferred so you can use the output to an aftermarket ECU.
