A-engine Variations
There are a number of different types of water outlets for A-series engines.
Gasket Types (2-bolt, 3-bolt, 4-bolt)
45-degree outlet | 90-degree outlet
3-bolt and 4-bolt types have accessory bolt bosses
* 2-bolt Type -- as used by early engines, and some late engines * 3-bolt Type -- newer engines, with extra mounting bosses * 4-bolt Type -- newer engines, notably those with Air Passage
4-bolt Type | Air Passage (red arrow)
A most important difference is whether it fits over the Air Passage in some cylinders heads.
It further breaks down:

Head Mating Surface
Starting with the 1973/974 A Engine Redesign, all A-series cylinder heads featured an alternator placed on the right side of engine. This in turn necessitated adding a bolt hole to the front face of the head next to the water outlet (the hole is for the alternator mounting tension bracket).
This means the water outlet was rotated up so as to not cover the bolt. This in turn means the radiator hose location is different, even though the first year B210 radiator is otherwise nearly identical to the B110.

The 4-bolt gasket works on a 2-bolt housing.
2-bolt Type
The 2-bolt type is used by B10 and B110. It is also used by B210/B310 engines that do not have an Air Injection passage in the cylinder head.

You can see how on newer engines, the alternator bracket bolts next to the outlet. This requires the outlet at 45 degrees up so the bolt is uncovered.

Everco part number W2499 similar but is heavy cast iron (all factory housing are light alloy, so this is incorrect material)
The purpose of the late 1973 water temp switch is unknown, but it might replace the ambient air temp switch of the TCVAS system. In other Datsun models it was used to disable EGR, including PB110 L14 engine (in thermostat housing) and EGI A14E engine (in EGR adapter on intake manifold). On the 1974 L18-powered 620, it was activated at 120 degrees, so it is the wrong temp to be used to control a radiator fan.

The 3-bolt water outlet was used in newer engines that do not have an air port in the front of the cylinder head -- and that do not have the alternator bracket bolted to the front of the head. In this case, the outlet can exit more to the side, even covering the high bolt hole.

All engines with Air passage in the cylinder head require a 4-bolt housing and gasket. Some newer engines without Air system also use the 4-bolt kit.
