Datsun 1200s use a typical paper-type engine air filter in a real metal air cleaner.

Datsun 1200 Cold Region type (hot/cold type) air cleaner -- has a hose connector for hot air. This is discussed below in Anti-Icing

Datsun 1200 Cold Region A.T.C. (automatic) type air cleaner is identified by the round flap actuator

1977 VB210 Japan is similar to Datsun 1200:
Tightening
Turn the wingnut down until it contacts the air cleaner lid. Then tighten the wing nut 3 turns:
Removal
The air cleaner must be removed to inspect the carburetor or vacuum hoses.
Cleaner Removal
- IMPORTANT: If you have a warm/cold air cleaner, first remove the hoses as outlined below
- Twist and pull the thick breather hose straight up out of the rocker cover
- Remove the two 10mm-headed bolts from the side of the air cleaner away from the engine
- Remove the one 10mm-headed bolt from the bracket next to the rocker cover
- Untwist the wingnut holding the air cleaner top on. Carefully remove the washer & rubber piece
- lift the lid off and remove the air filter element
- lift the air cleaner body straight up
Hot/Cold Air Cleaner
If you have an warm/cold air type air cleaner do this first before attempting to remove the air cleaner:
- Grab the hot air tube just underneath the air cleaner snout. Carefully twist the hot air tube to loosen it. If it won't twist, unscrew the clamp first. Be careful not to damage the cardboard tubing. After it is loose, pull it down off the bottom of the air cleaner snout. Leave the bottom of the tube connected, only separate it from the air cleaner
If you have the ATC type (vacuum controlled) air cleaner do this:
- Twist and pull the ATC vacuum hose out of the intake manifold port
- Disconnect the vacuum hose at the rear of the air cleaner

Anti-Icing
To prevent ice up in winter, air cleaners for temperate markets have a temperature control. For example, this Japan-market air cleaner draws hot air to prevent icing (carb icing can over at temperatures several degreesn freezing):
The hot air is drawn up from the exhaust manifold
Automatic Temperature Control
Some JDM 1200s and 1972 USA models use an Automatic Temperature Control air cleaner for year-round constant inlet temperature. This protects again carb icing, but also regulates the temperature for consistent jetting. For details, see ATC.
Late A-engine
From 1976, B210 (except VB210) changed to a front bracket type air cleaner. This was to provide more clearance for the EGR valve.

Likewise, B310 Wagon, Sedan & Coupe changed to a front bracket type air cleaner, while VB310 Van stayed similar to the 1200 air cleaner. This applied to A12/A12A as well as A14/A15 engines.
Late Sunny Truck
1989 October brought a new intake manifold so the air cleaner now mounts with thin bracket at rear, and double-bracket at front.
